How to Get Involved in Your Community as an Agent

July 15, 2026

There’s a good chance you’re interested in becoming an insurance agent because it’s important to you to be part of your community.  And those community connections can help you grow your business. Even if community involvement is already part of your life, expanding can help you broaden your reach.

Here are some opportunities to consider.

Hold an Informational Event at Your Library

Think about the questions your clients ask you regularly and build an information session around them. Maybe first-time home buyers have questions about homeowners insurance or new parents want guidance on choosing life insurance.

Offer a session at your local library or another community location where you explain the details most people need to know and answer questions. You’ll make in-person connections with people who need your services.

You could even want to repurpose this content for your social media, allowing you to reach an even larger audience.

Host a Table at Community Events

Setting up a meet-and-greet table is a great way to meet people in your community, find out more about their lives and introduce your business. Local farmers markets might offer weekly or monthly opportunities for local businesses to host tables. If that feels like a big commitment, look into running events like 5K races, fundraisers and events like art shows or holiday strolls.

Connect With Nonprofits

Many nonprofits are stretched thin and their attention may shift to pressing matters like fundraising or building houses, letting things like reviewing their insurance fall to the bottom of their to-do list. Offer to review their insurance coverage and make sure they have the protection they need at a price they can afford. You might find that no one has looked at their coverage in a long time and they’ll welcome the assistance.

Build a Small Business Network

Partner with some local businesses and entrepreneurs and agree to refer leads to each other. For example, you might find that your clients who are buying life insurance also need a will, and you can refer them to a lawyer. Or maybe there’s an auto dealership you could recommend when your clients need new cars after accidents.

These referrals can go both ways, of course, and you can even promote each other’s businesses on your social media accounts.

Make Volunteering a Regular Part of Your Routine

While every agent’s schedule is different, it’s crucial to make sure you fit some recurring volunteering opportunities into your calendar. That way, you’ll establish a consistent presence in your community.

Collect Charitable Donations

You could host a toy drive in the winter, collect canned goods for a local food pantry or offer space for a donation drive after a weather emergency. Promoting your collection will get your name out in the community, and people will become more familiar with you and your office location when they drop off their donations.
